A very easily accessible local attraction that is steeped in History. 700 years old and with a past that can boast royal visits, dramatic battles and hidden secrets, Ripley is a fascinating attraction for both young and old. Set in magnificent grounds with two lakes, walled gardens and a deer park. There are guided tours and during the summer they specifically cater them for children.
Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal

A dramatic 12th century ruin, these are some of the largest monastic ruins in the country. Set amidst remarkable surroundings in the Valley of the River Skell the Abbey is a wonderful place to explore. Attached to the Abbey is the Studley Royal water garden, an addition to the grounds made in the 1700s, which contain ponds and canals amongst the ancient trees and pathways. There are various events and tours held throughout the year, so it’s worth checking what’s going on before you go.

Newby Hall is a unique place to visit. An historic hall, magnificently decorated and offering plenty of interest as well as extensive grounds brilliantly designed for children. The adventure gardens have everything from forts to an interactive water garden. You can have a go on the pedaloes or all have a ride on the miniature railway. There is also a sculpture park, a woodland walk and some sumptuous gardens, so you can’t fail but to be impressed by something along the way!

Something the smaller members of the family are sure to delight in, Hesketh Farm offers children the chance to interact with a variety of farm animals in a safe and fun environment. The farm is really hands on, encouraging the children to bottle feed, collect eggs and give friendly cuddles, where suitable. Everything has been thought of, with an impressive play area, giant sand pit and even a straw maze.
National Railway Museum

A fascinating museum that is informative and fun. With iconic, historic and even royal trains on display there is something that is sure to impress. There are workshops, a research library and the chance to see real engineers at work. For younger visitors there is a railway themed play area as well as a miniature railway that everyone can have a go on. Themed events are held regularly for all ages and interests. Admission is free, apart from on certain events.
The Forbidden Corner

Completely crazy but wonderfully fun the Forbidden Corner is unlike any other visitor attraction. Created in four acres of land in the Yorkshire Dales the forbidden Corner is a labyrinthine maze, interspersed with surprising statues and quirky buildings. Be on your guard as you never know what could happen around the next corner and don’t be afraid of a challenge. Good for kids, but may be appreciated more by 12 +. Booking is essential.
